What is a minimalist window?

In a conventional window, the frame is clearly visible around the glazing and reads as a distinct object within the wall. In a minimal architectural glazing system, much of the head, base and jamb framing can be recessed into the floor, ceiling and adjoining walls.

The visible elevation can therefore consist predominantly of glass, with only narrow vertical junctions remaining between adjacent panels.

Achieving that appearance depends on several parts of the system working together. The glass must be capable of spanning larger areas. The aluminium sections must provide sufficient strength within relatively compact profiles. Sliding mechanisms must carry substantial panel weights reliably, while the concealed perimeter details still have to deal with drainage, weather protection, thermal performance and structural movement.

For much of architectural history, the dimensions of a window were constrained by the glass available to build it.

Large sheets were difficult and expensive to produce consistently, so windows were assembled from smaller panes held within timber or metal glazing bars. The subdivision was partly architectural, but it was also a practical consequence of glass manufacture.

Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, provides an early example of glass becoming a primary architectural material at enormous scale.

The building used 293,655 panes of glass supported by a prefabricated iron and timber structure. Standardised components allowed an exceptionally large glazed building to be assembled rapidly.

Its relevance to the history of minimalist windows lies in the scale of the idea. Crystal Palace demonstrated that a building envelope could be conceived largely as a combination of glass and structure rather than as masonry punctuated by individual window openings.

Steel and reinforced concrete construction gave early twentieth-century architects much greater freedom in the design of external walls.

Where the facade no longer carried the same structural loads, windows could extend horizontally across elevations, corners could be opened and glazing could occupy a much greater proportion of the building envelope.

Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret were among those investigating how the window itself could develop alongside this new architecture. During the 1920s they explored horizontal sliding mechanisms as engineered components of the building, and in July 1926 patented a horizontally sliding window concept.

Mies van der Rohe pushed transparency further through projects such as Villa Tugendhat in Brno, constructed in 1929 and 1930.

Large glazed elevations established a direct visual relationship between the interior and surrounding landscape. The house also incorporated retractable glazed elements capable of disappearing below floor level, allowing sections of the external enclosure to open far more completely than a conventional window.

Projects of this kind brought two strands of development together. The external wall could increasingly be conceived as glass, while the glazed element itself could operate as an engineered mechanism.

Both ideas remain central to modern minimalist windows, where large areas of transparent envelope are combined with opening systems intended to leave as little visible structure as possible.

California and large areas of movable glass

Post-war residential architecture, particularly in California, developed the relationship between glazing, domestic space and landscape further.

The Case Study House programme, which began in the United States in 1945, encouraged architects to experiment with industrial materials and new forms of residential construction. The Eames House, completed in 1949, combined a steel structure with extensive areas of glazing.

Richard Neutra's Kaufmann Desert House, completed in 1946, used sliding glazed doors to connect living spaces with terraces and the desert landscape.

The framing in these buildings was considerably more visible than in contemporary minimal systems, but the architectural objective is familiar. Glass allowed interior spaces to maintain a strong relationship with the landscape while still providing an environmental enclosure, and sliding panels allowed parts of that enclosure to open.

By this point, the architectural demand for large movable glass elevations was clearly established. The following decades were largely concerned with developing the materials and engineering required to execute that idea at greater scale and with better performance.

Float glass changes the scale and quality of glazing

The development of the float glass process by Pilkington during the 1950s was one of the most important advances in the history of minimalist windows.

Experiments began in 1952. By 1958, Pilkington had successfully produced a continuous sheet entirely through the float process, and the technology was publicly announced in January 1959.

Float glass provided a method of manufacturing consistently flat, high-quality glass at industrial scale. It subsequently became the dominant method of flat glass production worldwide.

This development was particularly important for architecture in which the glass itself occupied an increasingly large proportion of the elevation. As visible framing became less dominant, the optical quality, dimensions and performance of the glass became more important.

The large transparent surfaces explored by Modernist architects could now be produced with far greater consistency, creating the material basis for the larger glazed panels that would later become fundamental to minimal sliding systems.

Large sheets of glass still required an appropriate framing system.

Aluminium became particularly useful to modern glazing because it combines relatively low weight with durability, corrosion resistance and the ability to be extruded into accurate and complex profiles.

Its development within windows and doors allowed manufacturers to refine the relationship between strength and visible frame dimensions.

At the same time, other components of the system were advancing. Bearings and running gear became capable of carrying heavier panels. Weather seals improved. Drainage paths became more sophisticated. Thermal breaks reduced conductive heat transfer through metal frames, and manufacturing tolerances became increasingly precise.

The modern minimalist sliding window emerged from these developments working together. The architectural requirement was for larger areas of movable glass with less visible support, while the engineering challenge was to make those elevations practical as part of an external building envelope.

The technical challenge of large sliding glass panels

Sliding systems have an architectural advantage because the panel moves parallel with the opening.

A large glazed panel can therefore open without requiring the internal or external clearance associated with a hinged door. This makes sliding particularly suitable for wide openings and floor-to-ceiling glazing.

Increasing the dimensions of the panel also increases the technical demands placed on the system.

Glass becomes heavier. Running gear has to carry greater loads without compromising operation. Larger openings increase the importance of wind resistance and structural stiffness. The tracks and seals have to control air and water while still allowing the panel to move freely.

Drainage, acoustics and thermal performance also have to be maintained around an opening deliberately designed with very little visible frame.

This helps explain the gap between the appearance of large sliding glass walls in twentieth-century architecture and the later development of dedicated high-performance minimal systems. The architectural idea arrived earlier than the engineering required to execute it with the performance expected from a contemporary facade.

Integrating the frame into the building

The development of the contemporary minimalist window depended as much on concealing the frame as reducing its dimensions.

Perimeter sections could increasingly be coordinated with the surrounding floor, wall and ceiling construction. The base track could sit within the floor build-up, the head could be recessed into the ceiling and the jambs could disappear behind adjacent finishes.

This changed the way the window was read architecturally.

Instead of appearing as a framed component inserted into a structural opening, the glazing could extend visually to the surrounding surfaces. The remaining visible elements were concentrated at the junctions between glass panels.

The same integration makes detailing more important. Concealed base tracks still require drainage. Recessed heads still have to accommodate movement and structural loads. Flush thresholds depend on careful coordination between internal floor levels, external surfaces and water management.

The visual reduction of the frame therefore relies on closer integration between the glazing system and the building around it.

The modern minimalist window emerges

By the end of the twentieth century, specialist manufacturers were bringing these developments together into dedicated minimal frame sliding systems.

Large high-performance glazed panels could be combined with increasingly narrow interlocks, sophisticated running mechanisms and perimeter frames designed to disappear into the surrounding construction.

The minimalist window had become a specialist architectural system in its own right.

Central sightline dimensions remained important, but they represented only one part of the design. Glass weight, panel dimensions, structural loading, drainage, thermal performance, tolerances, thresholds and interfaces with the building all had to be resolved within the same system.

This remains an important distinction in contemporary glazing. The quality of a minimal sliding system is determined by the complete assembly and its integration with the architecture, not only by the width of the visible aluminium between two panes.

The development of Keller minimal windows

Keller's development sits within this broader history of minimalist windows.

The company was established in Luxembourg in 1980 and developed experience in highly glazed architectural structures over the following decades.

In 2007, Keller developed the minimal windows sliding system. The system was presented internationally from 2009, followed by the growth of Keller's specialist partner network during the following decade.

Greater areas of glazing increase the importance of thermal and solar performance, while increasingly complex panel arrangements require accurate manufacture and installation.

Minimalist glazing has developed by resolving these technical demands while progressively reducing the amount of the system that remains visually prominent.
