The Farmhouse
Set within a rural landscape, Private House is a carefully considered extension which replaces the traditional separation between home and garden with expansive glazing, creating a highly transparent living environment. Through the combination of corner opening sliding doors, structural glazing and integrated timber screening, the project delivers a bright, open-plan space that feels instantly connected to the outdoors.
Two minimal windows 4+ slim sliding doors were specified on the project connecting the kitchen diner to the garden, designed by Chris Bowen Architects, this contemporary kitchen extension reimagines the relationship between the house and garden. Through the careful integration of corner opening sliding doors, structural glazing and external timber screening, the project creates a highly transparent living space that embraces natural light and uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside.

Project Overview
The Farmhouse is a contemporary rear extension designed by Chris Bowen Architects that redefines the relationship between home and garden. Conceived as a light-filled kitchen and dining space, the project uses expansive glazing, a fully opening corner detail and structural glass elements to create a seamless connection to the surrounding landscape. By combining minimal windows 4+ corner opening sliding doors, the extension balances modern architectural simplicity with the warmth and character of its rural setting, delivering a highly transparent living environment designed for everyday indoor-outdoor living.
Design Intent
The design intent for The Farmhouse was to create a contemporary extension that would enhance the connection between the home and its rural surroundings while maintaining a simple and refined architectural aesthetic. Chris Bowen Architects sought to remove the traditional barriers between inside and outside, allowing the kitchen and dining space to extend naturally into the garden.
Glazing was fundamental to achieving this vision. Large-format corner opening sliding doors were specified to maximise natural light, frame views of the landscape and create uninterrupted sightlines throughout the extension. The corner opening configuration was designed to eliminate the visual presence of the building's corner, delivering a seamless transition between the interior living spaces and the external terrace.
Performance
While designed to maximise transparency and openness, The Farmhouse also delivers the high levels of performance expected from a modern residential extension. The minimal windows 4+ sliding door systems combine slim sightlines with excellent thermal insulation, weather resistance and smooth operation, ensuring comfort throughout the year. High-performance double glazing helps to regulate internal temperatures while maximising natural daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
The addition of external timber sliding shutters further enhances the building's performance by providing flexible solar shading and privacy control. Together, these carefully integrated elements create a comfortable, energy-efficient living environment that balances architectural ambition with everyday practicality.
Project Outcome
Private House successfully delivers a contemporary rural home that balances modern living requirements with a strong connection to its agricultural setting. Through a careful and considered design approach, Bowen Architects transformed the brief into a home that responds sensitively to the surrounding landscape while enhancing the daily experience of its occupants.
The completed design creates a seamless relationship between interior and exterior spaces, maximising natural light, views, and access to the countryside. The use of high-quality, durable materials and a restrained architectural language ensures the building sits comfortably within its rural context while providing a distinctly modern identity.
