Located in Edwalton, Nottingham, Croft Road is a contemporary replacement dwelling designed to sit comfortably within a mature, tree lined residential setting. The project replaces a former bungalow with a carefully considered family home that balances modern architectural expression with the established character of the area.

The design scheme focuses on natural light, privacy and strong connections to the surrounding landscape. To achieve these objectives, minimal windows® slim sliding glass doors in Nottingham were specified throughout the ground floor, creating large glazed openings that support both the architectural intent and the way the home is used on a daily basis.

Project Overview

The glazing strategy is centred around multiple minimal windows sliding systems installed across the rear and courtyard facing elevations.

In total, seven sliding door systems were integrated into the design, using combinations of two-track and three-track configurations to suit the layout of each opening.

The largest system spans over 5 metres in width, with full height glazing that maximises daylight and establishes direct access to the landscaped garden.

The result is a series of large, coordinated glass elevations that allow the architecture to open fully to the exterior while retaining a clear and minimal visual language.

Design Intent

The architectural concept for Croft Road was driven by the need to create a contemporary home that remains sensitive to its surroundings while offering improved living quality through light and openness.

The plan was organised to take advantage of the south and south-west facing aspects of the site, including a private courtyard designed to capture evening sunlight.

Slim sliding glass doors were essential in achieving this, allowing entire sections of the facade to open without interrupting sightlines. Rather than introducing heavy framed elements, the glazing remains deliberately minimal, enabling uninterrupted views of the garden and reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior spaces.

This approach highlights how slim sliding glass doors in Nottingham can support both architectural form and environmental performance within high-end residential design.

System Engineering

The minimal windows sliding systems used at Croft Road were engineered to deliver large panel sizes while maintaining ultra-slim sightlines.

The aluminium frames incorporate 21mm interlockers, ensuring that connections between panels remain visually minimal even across wide spans.

One of the glazing elements transitions into a 90° glass-to-glass corner, removing the need for a structural frame at the junction and allowing the glazed facade to wrap seamlessly around the building.

Each pane of glass is carefully sized and engineered, with some panels weighing over 120kg. This level of precision is essential to ensure consistent operation, durability and alignment across multiple systems within the same project.

Performance

The glazing specification balances thermal efficiency, durability and ease of use, supporting the long-term performance of the home.

Double glazed toughened safety glass with low-E coating provides energy efficiency while maintaining high levels of clarity and light transmission.

The system incorporates insulated interlockers to improve overall thermal performance, allowing the glazing to meet the required performance standards without compromising the minimal aesthetic.

Flush threshold detailing creates a level transition between internal and external spaces, making the doors suitable for everyday use while maintaining effective drainage and weather performance.

Installation

The installation required careful planning due to the number of sliding systems and the need to maintain consistent alignment across all openings.

Specialist lifting equipment was used to position structural glass elements accurately, while sequencing was coordinated with the wider construction programme to protect finishes and ensure precise fitting.

Additional protection measures were put in place during construction to prevent damage to the glazing while other works were completed. These steps ensured that the final installation maintained the clean detailing and performance standards expected of a high-end residential project.

Outcome

The completed Croft Road project demonstrates how slim sliding glass doors in Nottingham can transform a residential design by introducing light, openness and strong connections to the landscape.

The use of multiple large-format sliding systems allows the ground floor to function as a series of flexible living spaces that can open fully to the garden. At the same time, the minimal detailing ensures that the glazing remains visually recessive, supporting the overall architectural composition rather than dominating it.

For architects and developers, this project provides a clear example of how premium sliding glass systems can be integrated into contemporary homes to deliver both performance and refined architectural outcomes.
