Lowndes Square is a landmark residential redevelopment located in the heart of Knightsbridge. Behind the retained historic façade at numbers 39–40, a substantial internal transformation has created a collection of high‑end lateral and duplex apartments, supported by premium concierge services, secure underground parking and refined shared amenities.
A defining feature of the renovation is the integration of vertical sliding sash windows in Knightsbridge, achieved using minimal windows® systems. These large-scale glazed elements introduce exceptional levels of daylight to the interior spaces while preserving the building’s architectural presence from the street. The project demonstrates how contemporary glazing solutions can be sensitively introduced into prestigious central London locations without compromising character or performance.

The architectural vision for Lowndes Square centred on unlocking light, space and luxury within the constraints of a retained historic exterior. The designers sought to maximise daylight penetration throughout the deep plan apartments while maintaining a calm, elegant visual language across all shared and private spaces.
Stairwells, internal lightwells and circulation areas were deliberately treated as architectural moments rather than secondary spaces. Double height glazing was introduced to line key vertical routes through the building, ensuring that natural light filters downward and animates the interior throughout the day. The minimalist finishes and restrained colour palette of the apartments are enhanced by this abundance of daylight, allowing materials, textures and artwork to be appreciated under natural conditions.
The redevelopment of Lowndes Square required careful coordination across multiple structural, spatial and heritage constraints. While the external façade remained largely unchanged, the internal volumes were reconfigured extensively to create spacious modern apartments with courtyards, lightwells and Juliet balconies.
Introducing large, glazed openings within these internal environments demanded glazing systems capable of significant scale, acoustic performance and precision alignment. The lightwell surrounding a central spiral stone staircase required full height glazed walls that could operate both as architectural features and as daylight‑delivering elements. Elsewhere, sliding openings needed to integrate seamlessly with internal pockets, balustrades and structural zones while maintaining visual consistency across multiple floors.
The minimal windows® systems used at Lowndes Square provided the engineering capability and visual refinement required for this complex residential project. Double height vertical sliding sash windows were specified to create glazed walls measuring up to 7m in height. One of these installations remains fully fixed, while the second features a motorised lower sash that slides vertically using concealed counterweights and hidden drive mechanisms. This allows controlled natural ventilation without interrupting the architectural harmony of the lightwell.
Across the building, a series of automated and manually operated minimal windows® sliding door systems were incorporated into internal courtyards, rooftop terraces and Juliet balconies. Several of the largest openings use single sliding panels weighing up to 700kg, retreating fully into concealed wall pockets via ceiling‑mounted linear drive motors. The slim framing profiles ensure visual continuity throughout the project, while the triple glazed specification supports thermal comfort, acoustic attenuation and security.
The refined surface finish across all frames was carefully selected to mimic the appearance of anodised aluminium, providing understated elegance appropriate to a Knightsbridge setting. The integration of these systems allows the building to function as a contemporary residence while maintaining the discretion and restraint expected of its location.
A Knightsbridge Residential Development Defined by Vertical Sliding Sash Windows
Lowndes Square sets a benchmark for luxury urban redevelopment where heritage, performance and contemporary design meet. The integration of vertical sliding sash windows in Knightsbridge Lowndes Square brings daylight deep into the building, transforming stairwells, lightwells and circulation zones into bright architectural spaces.
For architects and developers working within listed or façade‑retained buildings, this project illustrates how minimal windows® systems can support ambitious glazing strategies without compromising refinement or technical performance.
