Monroe Drive
Monroe Drive is a contemporary new build home located in the heart of Richmond. Designed with a fluid, curved architectural form, the house required a glazing solution that could match the ambition of its sweeping geometry and unusually tall interior volumes. The rear elevation overlooks a landscaped pool terrace, and the client wanted to create a seamless visual and physical connection between the open plan kitchen and dining space and the outdoor area.
To achieve this effect, the architects specified 3.9m tall sliding doors in Richmond, selecting minimal windows® for their ability to deliver ultra slim sightlines and exceptional structural capability at significant height. The result is a striking rear façade that enhances the sculptural language of the home and transforms the poolside elevation into a dramatic, light filled architectural feature.

Designing Contemporary Poolside Living With Ultra Slim Glazing
Architects Featherstone Young approached Monroe Drive with a clear intent: to design a modern family home that offered generous spatial flow, elevated ceiling heights and unbroken views over the outdoor pool. The high, feature elevation of the building required a glazing system capable of meeting both the height requirements and the precision demanded by the architecture.
The minimal windows® sliding systems were an ideal match. Their slim aluminium profiles supported the visual lightness of the exterior while accentuating the height and openness of the internal spaces. The pool facing elevation relies on expansive panes of glass that draw daylight deep into the interior, ensuring that the living spaces feel connected to the garden at every moment. The precision engineered door configurations used at Monroe Drive enabled the architects to preserve the purity of the curved walls and maintain a coherent material palette throughout the façade.
Meeting Structural, Spatial and Geometric Challenges
The significant height of the required glazing introduced technical complexity. Standard sliding door systems used elsewhere in the home could not reach the 3.9 metre height needed on the pool elevation. This made it essential to specify a system that could combine strength, slenderness and stability without compromising the architectural intent.
The geometry of the rear wall also presented challenges. The elevation bent and tapered toward an angled junction with a stone wall. This meant that precise detailing was required at the point where the sliding doors met the shaped return. The configuration of the internal spaces meant that the doors needed to operate smoothly at height while maintaining consistent sightlines across the entire elevation.
The design brief also required the glazing to support full accessibility between the internal living space and the pool terrace. This demanded a flush threshold that could achieve the correct drainage performance while maintaining weather protection and clean visual lines.
The minimal windows® Sliders Provided the Technical Capability Needed for 3.9m Tall Sliding Doors
The minimal windows® sliding systems provided the engineering strength, installation flexibility and design precision needed to achieve the vision for Monroe Drive. The 3.9 metre tall doors were manufactured with reinforced profiles to support the additional height while still achieving the signature 21 millimetre sightline associated with the minimal windows® system.
At the angled junction, a shaped frameless fixed return was used to create a clean connection between the sliding door and the stone wall. This allowed the glazing to follow the angled geometry of the architecture without introducing visual heaviness.
The configuration of the main door, measuring 5.1 metres wide and 3.9 metres tall, used a three track system that allowed two thirds of the opening to glide away. The second door, 3.6 metres wide and 3.9 metres tall, used a three panel, two track setup that ensured the middle panel could slide internally, providing ventilation and easy poolside access.
The flush threshold installation enabled uninterrupted movement between inside and out, which was essential for a home designed around contemporary family living and outdoor leisure. The result is a façade that elevates the architecture and provides a visually powerful backdrop to the pool terrace.
A Contemporary Richmond Home Enhanced by 3.9m Tall Sliding Doors
The completed home at Monroe Drive is an example of how tall glazing, clean detailing and minimal framing can transform a contemporary residence. The 3.9 metre tall sliding doors in Richmond deliver a sense of openness and visual clarity that enhances the curved form of the architecture and strengthens the connection between indoor and outdoor living.
Whether viewed from the kitchen, the dining space or the pool terrace, the glazing becomes a key architectural feature that reflects the ambition of the design. For architects, developers or clients seeking slim, premium, large scale sliding doors on high specification residential projects, Monroe Drive demonstrates the capability of the minimal windows® system at its best.
