Fodens Farm
Fodens Farm is a prominent residential and agricultural property near Macclesfield, surrounded by the rolling countryside of rural Cheshire. The development combines converted farm buildings with a new extension, using traditional brickwork and contemporary glass to create a considered relationship between the architecture and its agricultural setting.
Multiple minimal windows® sliding door systems were installed across the property. The most prominent form the ground floor of a two storey wraparound glazed gable, where large sliding panels, fixed glass and an open corner connect the interior with the surrounding landscape. A further large sliding system provides vehicle access to the garage. Fodens Farm is a distinctive example of slim sliding glass doors in Cheshire, combining 21mm sightlines, large glass panels and consistent minimal detailing across a substantial rural property.

Project Overview
The minimal windows® glazing strategy includes several sliding door systems installed across the converted farm buildings and new extension. The principal arrangement is positioned beneath the two storey glazed gable, where sliding and fixed glass wrap around three elevations to form a highly transparent ground floor.
Across the front elevation, a three track system measures approximately 6.8 metres wide by 3 metres high. It comprises two sliding panes and one fixed pane, creating a wide opening towards the rural landscape while maintaining expansive views when closed.
The glazing continues around both sides of the extension. One side incorporates fixed glass with a glass-to-glass corner connection, while the other includes one fixed and one sliding panel arranged to create an open corner. Together, these systems establish a continuous glass wall around the base of the gable.
A further example is the three track sliding system installed across the garage. Measuring approximately 9 metres wide, its three sliding panes provide generous vehicle access while continuing the same minimal framed glazing language used elsewhere on the property.
Design Intent
The architectural approach sought to introduce extensive contemporary glazing while retaining a clear connection with the character of the existing farm buildings. Traditional style brickwork helps the converted and newly built elements sit comfortably within the rural setting, while the large glass walls bring light and openness to the interior.
At the new extension, the wraparound sliding doors allow the ground floor to engage with the landscape from several directions. The open corner further reduces the visual and physical boundary between the interior and outside, while the fixed corner maintains uninterrupted views around the adjoining elevation.
Using the same slim framed system for the garage created consistency across the wider property. Rather than treating the garage as a purely functional building, the sliding glass doors provide practical vehicle access while maintaining the refined architectural language established by the main residence.
For architects, developers and private clients considering slim sliding glass doors in Cheshire, Fodens Farm demonstrates how multiple minimal windows® systems can be coordinated across a substantial rural development while responding to different opening and access requirements.
System Engineering
The principal three track system spans approximately 6772mm and reaches 3013mm in height. Its two sliding panes and one fixed pane form the front of the wraparound glazed gable, with each large glass panel weighing approximately 256kg.
Along the side elevations, fixed and sliding minimal windows® panels create two different corner conditions. One uses a glass-to-glass connection between fixed panes, while the other forms an open corner using one fixed and one sliding panel. This combination allows the glazing to wrap around the extension while providing a wide opening at one end.
The garage system measures approximately 8955mm wide by 2114mm high. Three sliding panes move across separate tracks to create the opening required for vehicle access, with each panel weighing approximately 232kg. The matching glass and frame specification creates a consistent appearance between the garage and principal residence.
Slim 21mm interlockers minimise the visible aluminium where adjacent panes meet. The systems were engineered for a wind load of 0.65kN/m², supporting the performance of the large glazed openings within their exposed rural setting.
Performance
The minimal windows® systems incorporate double glazed clear toughened safety glass with a Low-E coating. This specification supports thermal performance while preserving natural light and clear views through the extensive glazed areas.
All glass was heat soak tested to significantly reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage caused by undetectable inclusions within the body of the glass. This was particularly important due to the size and weight of the individual panes.
The aluminium frames are finished in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey matt, creating a consistent dark frame across the different sliding systems. Flush threshold base frames provide clean transitions at the openings, while multipoint slim Type 1 shoot bolt locking systems provide secure operation.
Outcome
Fodens Farm demonstrates how slim sliding glass doors in Cheshire can be integrated across a substantial rural property to support both architectural and practical requirements.
The wraparound arrangement beneath the glazed gable creates a transparent ground floor with wide countryside views and a direct connection to the outside. Its combination of sliding panels, fixed glass and two different corner details gives the extension a distinctive identity while allowing the glazing to respond to the layout of each elevation.
The large garage system extends this approach to an ancillary building, providing practical vehicle access without departing from the minimal architectural language of the wider development.
For architects, developers and private clients planning a rural conversion or new build, Fodens Farm provides a clear example of how minimal windows® systems can combine large panels, 21mm sightlines, open corner detailing and wide access configurations within a coordinated glazing design.
