Located at Lakes by Yoo near Lechlade, Gloucestershire, The Lake House is a contemporary waterfront home designed to maximise its relationship with the surrounding landscape. Positioned on the edge of the lake within the Cotswolds estate, the property uses large areas of glazing to frame water views, increase natural light and strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces.

To achieve this, four minimal windows® sliding door systems were specified throughout the home, creating expansive glazed openings with ultra-slim sightlines and a consistent architectural language. The result is a strong example of slim sliding glass doors in Gloucestershire, demonstrating how premium glazing can enhance contemporary lakeside living.

Project Overview

The glazing strategy at The Lake House centres around four minimal windows® sliding door systems positioned to maximise views across the lake and surrounding landscape. Large format glass panels create broad openings from the principal living spaces, allowing daylight and views to become fundamental elements of the interior experience.

The largest sliding door system spans more than 7 metres in width and uses a three-track configuration with two sliding panes and one fixed pane. This arrangement provides generous opening sections while maintaining extensive uninterrupted glazing when closed.

Together, the sliding systems establish a strong visual relationship between the home and its waterfront setting while preserving the clean architectural lines of the building.

Design Intent

The design intent was to create a contemporary lakefront home that feels immersed within its landscape while maintaining a restrained and refined architectural appearance. Large expanses of glazing were required to capture views across the water, draw natural light into the living spaces and reinforce the connection between the house and its surroundings.

Slim sliding glass doors were central to this approach. The minimal aluminium framing allows the focus to remain on the views beyond, while the dark frame finish integrates seamlessly with the black timber-clad exterior.

For architects and private clients considering slim sliding glass doors in Gloucestershire, The Lake House demonstrates how large-scale glazing can be incorporated into luxury residential architecture without compromising the integrity of the overall design.

System Engineering

All four sliding door systems were specified with matching frame and glazing configurations to create consistency throughout the property. The largest installation measures approximately 7203mm wide by 2518mm high and comprises three large glass panels weighing approximately 230kg each.

The systems utilise ultra-slim 21mm interlockers, helping to minimise visible framing across large expanses of glass. Combined with the three-track configuration, this allows the openings to deliver maximum transparency while retaining smooth and reliable operation.

Every sliding system was fitted with integrated insect screens concealed within the frame construction. This detail is particularly valuable in a lakeside environment, allowing natural ventilation while helping manage insects commonly associated with waterfront locations.

Performance

The sliding doors were designed to deliver high levels of performance alongside the minimal aesthetic.

Double glazed clear toughened safety glass was specified throughout, incorporating solar control coatings to help manage heat gain while maintaining clear views across the lake. Heat soak testing was also carried out to significantly reduce the risk of spontaneous glass breakage in the large-format glazing units.

The systems were tested to a wind load of 0.65 kN/m² and incorporate flush thresholds with integrated slot drainage channels. This combination ensures practical day-to-day operation while maintaining the clean transitions expected within high-end residential architecture.

The inclusion of integrated insect screens further enhances usability, allowing the homeowners to enjoy ventilation and lakeside views without compromising comfort.

Outcome

The Lake House demonstrates how slim sliding glass doors in Gloucestershire can transform a contemporary home by creating uninterrupted views, enhanced natural light and a stronger connection to the landscape.

The large-format sliding systems allow the principal living spaces to open directly towards the lake, reinforcing the relationship between architecture and setting. At the same time, the slim 21mm sightlines ensure that the glazing remains visually discreet, allowing the surrounding environment to become the focal point.

For architects, developers and private clients seeking premium glazing solutions, the project provides a clear example of how minimal windows® can support luxury waterfront homes where performance, aesthetics and day-to-day usability are equally important.
