Configurations
Located in Formby, Merseyside, Shireburn is a substantial contemporary family home designed around natural light and a strong connection to the garden. Large areas of glass give the garden facing elevations a refined architectural character while opening the principal living spaces towards the outside.
Multiple minimal windows® sliding door systems were installed across the lounge, garden room, kitchen and dining area, garden studio and master suite. Large glass panels, slim aluminium profiles and flush thresholds connect the principal spaces with the garden and terraces. Shireburn is a refined example of slim sliding glass doors in Merseyside, with a marine grade frame finish specified to support durability in the coastal Formby location.

Project Overview
The minimal windows® glazing strategy incorporates multiple sliding door systems across the property, creating a consistent architectural language within spaces that have different layouts and opening requirements. The doors introduce natural light, frame views and provide direct access from the main living areas to the garden and terraces.
The largest system was installed within the lounge and measures approximately 6.3 metres wide by just over 3 metres high. Its three track configuration comprises two sliding panes and one fixed pane, creating a generous opening while retaining an expansive glazed wall when closed. Each pane weighs approximately 250kg.
A further three track system, containing two sliding panes and one fixed pane, provides access from the kitchen and dining space. Within the garden room, a sliding door system meets a fixed glass panel on the side return, forming a clean corner junction with minimal framing when closed.
Two additional minimal windows® sliding systems were installed within the garden studio. A further three track system forms the lower section of the glazed gable in the master suite, extending the use of slim framed glazing into the private areas of the home.
Design Intent
The architectural approach uses large areas of glazing to create a light and open relationship between the home and its garden. The contemporary external elevations are designed to maximise natural light while providing generous connections between the principal living spaces and outside.
Slim sliding glass doors were central to this approach. Their large panes and minimal aluminium profiles reduce visual interruption, allowing the rooms to benefit from garden views while creating practical access to the terraces and external spaces.
Using several systems across the property made it possible to maintain a consistent glazing language while responding to the requirements of each room. Three track configurations create wide openings in the lounge and kitchen, while the garden room system integrates with a fixed glass side return to continue the glazing around the corner.
For architects, developers and private clients considering slim sliding glass doors in Merseyside, Shireburn demonstrates how multiple minimal windows® systems can be incorporated throughout a substantial home while maintaining consistency in their proportions, finish and detailing.
System Engineering
The lounge system measures approximately 6259mm wide by 3020mm high. Its three track arrangement contains two sliding panes and one fixed pane, with each large glass panel weighing approximately 250kg. The configuration provides a wide opening while retaining slim junctions between the panes.
The kitchen and dining area also incorporates a three track system with two sliding panes and one fixed pane. In the garden room, the sliding doors meet a fixed glass panel on the side return, allowing the two glass elevations to form a coordinated corner arrangement with minimal sightlines.
Within the master suite, a three track minimal windows® system with two sliding panes and one fixed pane forms the base of a glazed gable. The sliding system has a total width of approximately 5180mm, creating a large opening while maintaining a consistent glass and frame specification across the lower part of the gable.
Two further sliding systems within the garden studio continue the same minimal architectural language in a separate area of the property. Together, the six systems provide a range of opening arrangements while retaining a coordinated appearance throughout the home.
Performance
The minimal windows® systems incorporate double glazed clear toughened safety glass. All glass was heat soak tested to significantly reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage caused by undetectable inclusions within its body. This provides additional reassurance for the large panes used across the project.
The aluminium frames are finished in RAL 9005 Black Matt with a marine grade coating. This enhanced finish was selected in response to the coastal Formby location, providing additional protection while maintaining a consistent dark frame across the different sliding systems.
Flush thresholds create clean transitions between the internal spaces and adjoining terraces. Security is provided by Type 4 internal key locks, integrated within the minimal framing to support secure and straightforward operation.
Outcome
Shireburn demonstrates how slim sliding glass doors in Merseyside can be used throughout a substantial contemporary home to create natural light, wide garden views and direct access to outside spaces.
The multiple minimal windows® systems respond to the different requirements of the lounge, garden room, kitchen and dining space, garden studio and master suite. Large three track arrangements create generous openings within the principal rooms, while the fixed side return and glazed gable show how sliding systems can form part of more complex glass compositions.
The RAL 9005 Black Matt frames provide visual consistency across the property, while the marine grade coating supports long term durability in the coastal environment. Flush thresholds and minimal framing complete the contemporary appearance of the garden facing elevations.
For architects, developers and private clients planning a high specification home near the Merseyside coast, Shireburn provides a clear example of how minimal windows® sliding doors can combine large glass panels, varied opening configurations and appropriate material finishes within a coordinated architectural design.
