For ARK Architects, one of the key design drivers was the integration of expansive glazing that would enhance the height and spatial quality of the hall. The building required glazing that could support the drama of the large oak structure while remaining visually lightweight. The chosen minimal windows® systems allowed the architects to reproduce the appearance of classic steel framing through applied glazing bars, ensuring that the building’s architectural language remained cohesive. Addressing Scale, Performance and Acoustic Requirements in a Rural Event Setting
Designing glazing for an event venue introduced several functional and environmental challenges. The barn needed to accommodate up to one hundred and fifty guests, meaning that temperature stability, ventilation and acoustic performance were essential. The rural setting required a glazing solution that would visually harmonise with the oak structure while offering durability and ease of maintenance. Since traditional steel systems could not achieve the required sizes, the design team needed an alternative that preserved the intended aesthetic. The primary installation is a two-track system measuring 4m high and 6m wide, configured with four large panes. The doors were finished in a specialist textured carbon black polyester powder coat to echo the depth of tone typical of steel systems.
All installations use double glazing with a low e coating and argon filled cavity to support the acoustic and environmental requirements of the venue. The flush threshold design ensures step free access for guests and maintains a clean architectural line across the floor plane.
