London Kitchen Extension with Slim Pivot Doors

This South London project saw the sensitive renovation and extension of an early Victorian mid terrace home, creating a contemporary open plan living space with a stronger connection to the garden. The new side return extension was designed to maximise natural light and improve the functionality of the ground floor, transforming the layout into a bright and spacious kitchen and dining area.

To support the architectural vision, minimal windows supplied two bespoke aluminium pivot doors to the rear elevation. Featuring ultra-slim 21mm sightlines and large-format glazing, the doors provide uninterrupted garden views while maintaining a clean, minimalist aesthetic. The expansive glazed openings enhance the sense of space within the extension and allow daylight to flood deep into the home.

A key design objective was to create a seamless relationship between the interior and exterior living spaces. Through the use of flush threshold detailing, continuous flooring finishes and wide-opening pivot doors, the extension achieves a smooth transition between the kitchen, dining area and garden. The completed project successfully combines contemporary architectural glazing with the character of the original Victorian property, delivering a light-filled and highly connected living environment.

The design intent for this project was to transform a traditional Victorian home with a contemporary extension that would improve the flow of the interior while strengthening its connection to the garden. The client sought a light-filled living space that felt open, spacious and visually connected to the outdoors, creating a more functional environment for modern family life.

To achieve this, the rear elevation was designed around large-format minimal windows® pivot doors. The ultra-slim aluminium framing and expansive glazed panels maximise natural daylight and provide uninterrupted views of the garden, allowing the landscape to become an extension of the interior. The glazing was specified to minimise visual barriers and create a sense of openness throughout the new kitchen and dining space.

A flush threshold detail and continuous flooring further reinforce the relationship between inside and outside, enabling a seamless transition between the two areas. The result is an extension that feels bright, connected and generous in scale, while remaining sympathetic to the character of the original Victorian property.

The bespoke gold-effect finish was selected to introduce a refined contemporary detail within the extension, complementing both the traditional brickwork and the clean, minimalist aesthetic of the architectural glazing. Together, the materials, proportions and glazing design create a balanced composition that combines heritage architecture with modern living requirements.

The glazing specification for this project was carefully selected to deliver high levels of thermal performance alongside the slim sightlines and minimalist design aesthetic. While maximising transparency and daylight was a key architectural objective, maintaining comfort throughout the year was equally important.
