The Field House,Totnes
Nestled within the Devon countryside, The Field House is a striking contemporary home designed to celebrate its rural setting through light, transparency and carefully considered architectural detailing. Showcasing the transformative impact of slim sliding doors in the Devon countryside, the project uses large expanses of glazing to frame uninterrupted views across the landscape, drawing natural light deep into the interior and creating a strong connection between home and nature.
Central to the design was the specification of minimal windows slim sliding doors 8.3 meters wide, selected for their ultra-slim profiles, exceptional performance, and ability to create a seamless relationship between inside and out.

Project Overview
The Field House is a contemporary rural residence designed to maximise its connection to the surrounding landscape. The project combines modern architectural principles with carefully selected materials to create a home that sits comfortably within its rural setting.
A key objective of the design was to establish a strong visual and physical relationship between the interior living spaces and the expansive views beyond. To achieve this, large format glazing was incorporated throughout the building, allowing natural light to flood the interiors while creating uninterrupted sightlines across the countryside.
minimal windows sliding doors were specified as the primary glazing solution, providing ultra-slim profiles and expansive glass elevations that support the project's minimalist architectural language. The largest installation spans over 8 metres across the main living space, creating a dramatic glazed façade that blurs the distinction between inside and out.
This project perfectly demonstrates the benefits of slim sliding doors in the Devon countryside, where expansive glazing can maximise views, connect living spaces to the landscape and enhance the experience of rural living. Working alongside complementary fixed glazing and aluminium window systems, the minimal windows installations form part of a cohesive design strategy focused on transparency, performance and architectural simplicity.
The result is a bright, contemporary home where the surrounding countryside becomes an integral part of daily life, creating a seamless dialogue between the built environment and the natural landscape.
Design Intent
The vision for The Field House was to create a contemporary rural home that feels intrinsically connected to its landscape. Situated within the open countryside of Devon, the design sought to maximise panoramic views while maintaining a refined architectural presence within its natural surroundings.
To realise this vision, minimal windows sliding doors were selected for their ability to deliver expansive glass elevations with exceptionally slim sightlines. The large-format glazing allows occupants to experience uninterrupted views across the surrounding landscape, while the minimal framing ensures the architecture remains understated and elegant.
Equally important was the desire to create flexible living spaces that could adapt to the changing seasons. The generous sliding glass walls enable the principal living areas to open directly onto external terraces, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor environments and reinforcing the home's connection to nature.
Performance
While the architectural ambition for The Field House centred on transparency and uninterrupted views, performance was equally important. The glazing specification needed to deliver exceptional thermal efficiency, weather resistance, security, and usability without compromising the minimalist aesthetic of the building.
minimal windows sliding doors were selected for their ability to accommodate large-format glass panels while maintaining remarkably slim sightlines. The system combines robust engineering with precision detailing, ensuring smooth operation across expansive openings and reliable performance in everyday use.
Throughout the property, high-performance double glazing helps to reduce heat loss and contribute to a comfortable internal environment throughout the year. Advanced aluminium framing systems incorporate thermal breaks to enhance energy efficiency, allowing the home to benefit from extensive glazing while maintaining excellent thermal performance.
Given the exposed rural location, durability was also a key consideration. The glazing systems were engineered to withstand demanding weather conditions, providing resistance to wind loads and driving rain while maintaining long-term performance. Marine-grade finished aluminium elements offer additional protection against environmental wear, ensuring the glazing retains its appearance and functionality for years to come.
Outcome
The completed Field House is a compelling example of how ultra-minimal glazing can transform the experience of a home, creating a living environment that is both architecturally refined and deeply connected to its surroundings. Through the careful integration of minimal windows sliding doors and complementary glazing systems, the project successfully delivers on its ambition to blur the boundaries between architecture and landscape.
The expansive glass elevations allow the Devon countryside to become a defining feature of the home, framing panoramic views and filling the interior with natural light throughout the day. Despite the scale of the glazing, the ultra-slim sightlines ensure that visual distractions are kept to a minimum, allowing the architecture and setting to take precedence.
The large sliding openings enhance the functionality of the home by creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. During warmer months, the principal living areas can be opened up to the surrounding terraces, while in cooler seasons the high-performance glazing maintains comfort without sacrificing the connection to the landscape.
