Configurations
Large sliding glass doors for sports architecture were central to The Kingdom at The Grove, a golf performance and custom fitting facility set within The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire. Developed in partnership with TaylorMade Golf, the building was designed for club fitting, training and hospitality within a premium golf environment.
During a golf fitting, players test different clubs and hit shots from inside the fitting room out towards the driving range. This meant the glazing needed to do more than frame the view. It needed to create a very tall, usable opening that allowed the room to function properly.
minimal windows® sliding doors were specified to meet this requirement, creating large glazed openings with slim sightlines, solar control and reliable operation in an exposed golf course setting.

Project Overview
The main minimal windows sliding door installation measures approximately 4.6 metres wide and 4.0 metres tall. This height was essential to the fitting room, allowing golfers to hit test shots out through the opening while maintaining a clear visual connection to the range.
Not every sliding door system can achieve this scale with large glass panels and minimal framing. The minimal windows system allowed the design team to create the required opening without introducing heavy sightlines into the elevation.
A second minimal windows sliding door was installed on the other side of the building for the putting studio, measuring approximately 4.4 metres wide and 2.9 metres tall. This gave the project a consistent glazing language across the key golf performance spaces.
Design Intent
The aim was to create a golf studio that felt open, precise and connected to the course. The large sliding doors allow the fitting room to operate as intended, while keeping the building visually linked to the driving range and surrounding landscape.
This made the project a strong example of large sliding glass doors for sports architecture, where the opening size is not only aesthetic but directly linked to the use of the building.
System Engineering
Both installations were designed as two panel, two track minimal windows sliding door systems. The main sliding doors use oversized glazed panels weighing up to approximately 419kg per panel.
Integrated drainage and multi point locking were included to support performance, security and daily use in the exposed golf course environment.
Performance
The sliding glass doors were specified with high performance double glazing and solar control coatings. The glass achieved approximately 70% light transmission, with a g value of 0.35 to help control solar gain.
Overall Uw values of approximately 1.31 to 1.32 W/m²K were achieved for the sliding door glazing. The systems were also engineered to suit wind loads of approximately 0.8 kN/m² across the exposed elevations.
Outcome
The minimal windows sliding doors help define how The Kingdom at The Grove works. They allow the fitting room to open directly onto the driving range, while also giving the lounge and putting studio the clear views expected from a premium golf facility.
This project shows how large sliding glass doors for sports architecture can support specialist building functions, not just provide access or views.
